Current Event in Technology

Instructions: Your assignment today is to research and summarize 3 articles about issues in our nation, our state, and/or our town dealing with technology using the Internet. When you perform a search and summarize, you must be careful to write it in your own words. For each of the current events, you need to follow these steps:
  • Include the name of the article.
  • List the author's name
  • Create a link with the articles URL for the chosen current event article.
  • Write a short summary (6-7 sentences minimum) of what you learned from the article.
  • Answer all of the required questions in detail.
  • Complete sentences are required for your answers.

For the first article, go to www.usatoday.com or some other site that posts daily world events and find an article of interest about something that is going on in the world. You may also choose to go to a network news site such as www.msnbc.com.

For the second article, go to www.ksl.com or another state paper and find an article of interest about something that is going on in our state.

For the third article, you can choose to do an event from the world, state, or city. If you choose to do our city, go to www.sltrib.com or www.deseretnews.com (can search by town) and find an article of interest about something that is going on in our town.

Article Title - First Week of iPhone5 Sales

Summarize your article.
The article talked about the new iPhone5 coming out. According to the article, many stores where the iPhone5 were first sold, are sold out now. The first weekend sales for the new iPhone was more than five million! With the iPhone4, the first weekend sales was about four million. The article also talks about how the map tool on the new iPhone is not the best, and how it's giving people wrong directions. The article also talks about how the iPhone5 is sold through three carriers. AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint. People have discovered that the phone is interchangeable between those three carriers.

What did you think was the most interesting part of the article?
That more than five million phones were sold on opening weekend. That's insane!

How does this current event affect your life? Is the change positive or negative?
It affects my life, because it affects the people around me. And the change is the same as any other cell phone, there are positive effects, and negative ones. The positive effects are the new communication abilities. The negative side is that people might become too attached to their new phones.

A new MRI machine was put into Utah's Clinical Neurosciences Center 2 weeks ago. This new MRI machine will be able to give a "real-time reading of actual tissue damage to their brains while surgery is ongoing". This machine will be able to look at the blood flow going into the brain, without using "contrast" which can have negative side effects.
What did you think was the most interesting part of the article?
That this new MRI machine weighs 9 tons!

How does this current event affect your life? Is the change positive or negative?
This change is positive, because it will help to better treat strokes.
This affects me becuase if I or someone I know has a stroke, then they can get really good treatment thanks to this new machine.

Article Title - Utah parents choosing the sex of their children

Summarize your article.
This new technology has come up in Utah. Parents can now choose the gender of their child. The process is 99% guaranteed safe. The technology can also be used to tell if the child will have any genetic diseases. The procedure costs anywhere from $15,000 to $18,000. This process is comletely legal here in Utah, but has been banned in Canada, Australia, and Europe.
What did you think was the most interesting part of the article?
That it costs 15 to 18 thousand dollars!
How does this current event affect your life? Is the change positive or negative?
I think the technology that can be used to look for genetic diseases is a positive effect. This technology will really affect me as I get older.
